So, what are the simple ways for you, as a consumer, to quickly know that this product is reliable? The answer is much simpler than you might think: checking to see if a product is UL certified is an easy way to tell.

What is UL Certification?

UL, known as Underwriter Laboratories, was founded in 1894 and is one of the world’s leading product safety testing and certification organizations, as well as one of the most authoritative safety certification organizations in North America and around the world. For more than a century, UL has tested hundreds of products and components to relevant safety standards and evaluated their management systems in accordance with international standards.

For UL’s different types of products, UL marks can be divided into different types, of which the following three are the most common in North America, respectively, LISTED, CLASSIFIED and RECOGNIZED COMPONENT.

  • LISTED: UL LISTED mark appear on end products and complete components suitable for factory and field installation. Common products include: IT products, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems, etc.
  • CLASSIFIED: UL classification mark appear on representative samples of products that UL has evaluated with respect to specific properties, a limited range of hazards or suitability for use under limited or special conditions.
  • RECOGNIZED COMPONENT: these marks are specifically used on component parts that are part of a larger product or system, including some switches, power supplies, printed wiring boards, some kinds of industrial control equipment and thousands of other products.

Why UL certification is important?

Due to UL’s authority and impartiality, its certification mark is highly recognized in the marketplace. It provides consumers, purchasing units and related organizations with a form of trust and assurance that a product’s safety performance meets the requirements of relevant standards and regulations. In other words, once a product is UL certified, it means that it has been rigorously tested and evaluated, and can be sold and used in the market with confidence.

How to know a product is UL certified?

Generally speaking, products that have been certified by UL will have the UL certification mark affixed to the product. You can check the UL certification information of the product on UL’s official website.

It should be noted that some products may not have the UL certification mark or the UL certification information cannot be found, this may be because the product has not been UL certified or UL certification information is not publicly available. In this case, you can consult with the product seller or manufacturer to find out whether the product has been certified by UL.
