Obtaining the ISED (formerly IC) certification is essential for any manufacturer, importer or distributor who wants to sell electronic devices in Canada. This is a rigorous process that evaluates and approves radio equipment, telecommunications terminal equipment, and broadcasting equipment for use in Canada. With the ISED Canada certification, businesses can demonstrate their commitment to excellence and gain a competitive advantage in an increasingly crowded marketplace, ensure your products are trusted and reliable.

What is ISED certification?

ISED (Innovation, Science and Economic Development) Canada regulates the radio spectrum for all radio devices operated in the country and defines the requirements for approval and certification of radio, consumer electronics and communications devices. ISED Canada Radio Standards Specifications set out the general technical and certification requirements, while Radio Standards Procedure RSP-100 Certification of Radio Apparatus and Broadcasting Equipment provides the requirements and process for obtaining and maintaining certification for radio equipment.

The ISED certification is a process that ensures electronic devices meet the radio frequency (RF) standards set by the Canadian government. The certification process is mandatory for any electronic device that emits RF signals, such as Wi-Fi routers, cell phones, and Bluetooth devices.

Why is ISED certification important?

Radio products can only be placed on the Canadian market once they comply with ISED Canada’s legal and technical requirements. Only after obtaining a Technical Acceptance Certificate, and the product is placed on the Radio Equipment List (REL), can a product then be released onto the market. Without such certification, market access for Canada will not be granted for radio product manufacturers.

Who needs ISED certification?

Any manufacturer or distributor who wants to sell electronic devices in Canada must obtain ISED certification. This includes both Canadian and non-Canadian companies.

What are the benefits of ISED certification?

Obtaining ISED certification has several benefits:

  • It ensures that your device is safe, reliable, and secure.
  • It gives you access to the Canadian market, which is a lucrative market for electronic devices.
  • It helps you to build trust with your customers, as they know that your device has been tested and certified by a reputable government agency.

How long does it take to obtain ISED certification?

The time it takes to obtain ISED certification depends on the complexity of the device and the availability of testing facilities. Generally, the process takes between two to six weeks.

How much does ISED certification cost?

The cost of ISED certification depends on the complexity of the device and the testing facility. Generally, the cost ranges from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.

What happens if my device fails the ISED certification?

If your device fails the ISED certification, you will need to make the necessary modifications and resubmit it for testing. This can be a time-consuming and costly process, which is why it’s essential to ensure that your device meets the Canadian standards before submitting it for testing.

What are the consequences of not obtaining ISED certification?

If you sell electronic devices in Canada without obtaining ISED certification, you could face fines or legal action. Additionally, your device could be removed from the market, which can damage your reputation and cause financial losses.

Are there any exemptions to ISED certification?

There are some exemptions to ISED certification, such as devices that operate exclusively on a wired network or devices that emit RF signals below a certain threshold. However, it’s essential to consult with an accredited testing facility to determine whether your device is exempt from certification.

Do the certification process have to be carried out by certification bodies located within Canada?

No, it doesn’t. As ISED Canada has appointed Foreign Certification Bodies (FCB) like GTG and TÜV SÜD across the world. FCBs have the authority to evaluate product test reports and issue technical acceptance certificates on behalf of ISED Canada.

How can GTG assist you with obtaining ISED certification?

Obtaining ISED certification can be a time-consuming and costly process, but it’s a necessary step to ensure that your device meets the Canadian standards and that you comply with the law. If you’re unsure about whether your device requires ISED certification, it’s essential to consult with an accredited testing facility like GTG to avoid fines or legal action.

Our certification body, GTG, is a Foreign Certification Body (FCB) appointed under the APEC TEL Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA). We can therefore manage the entire certification process on behalf of manufacturers wishing to export to the Canadian market.

As GTG liaises with the authority and local representative on your behalf, and GTG is authorized to certify and approve devices for the Canadian market, this avoids the delays that can be experienced with applications made directly to ISED Canada. Once the device passes the testing, you will receive a certificate of compliance, which allows you to sell your device in Canada.
