BIS will issue the certificate only after the initial inspection and evaluation of factory quality management system and sample inspection are confirmed to be satisfactory. The certification is supervised by the factory’s quality management system after completion of the certification. BIS will test samples taken from factories and markets to determine if products comply with Indian standards.

• Application form;
• Appointment form proving local agent in India or documents proving the presence of the manufacturer’s office in India and a letter of authorization from the Reserve Bank of India;

• Process flow diagram showing the entire manufacturing process of the product (from raw material to finished product);
• Quality control system, including quality manual, quality control plan, test plan;

• Fill out the application form. Foreign manufacturers are generally required to use a dedicated application form and prepare the relevant documentation to apply to BIS headquarters in New Delhi.
• Review. BIS will review the application documents submitted by the applicant and record the application if it is complete. The applicant shall pay the corresponding processing fee.
• Initial factory inspection: BIS will send a team of not more than 2 officials to inspect the factory. The applicant shall bear the travel and visa expenses of the officials to the factory and the corresponding inspection fees.
• Issue the certificate. A certificate will be issued to the applicant if the initial inspection and test results are satisfactory and the applicant agrees to perform a BIS approved inspection and testing program and pay the BIS logo fee. The certificate is valid for 1 year and the holder shall pay for the logo and the certificate annually.
• Post-certification supervision. BIS supervises the quality of its certified products through regular supervision of the holder and unannounced inspections and testing of samples from factories and markets. The certificate may be renewed if the test samples taken from the factory or market by the regular inspections meet the requirements by the inspection and independent testing results of that factory. The renewal fee is Rs. 500 for renewal of the certificate by submitting the dedicated form to the BIS. The holder of the certificate shall also bear the cost of sample inspection.

• BIS certification is generally valid for one year, and applicants must pay an annual fee for renewal. An extension may be applied for before the expiration date, at this time you need to submit an extension application and pay the application fee and annual fee;
• BIS accepts CB test reports issued by valid certification bodies;
• Certification processes will be faster if the applicant meets the following conditions:
  • Fill in the manufacturing plan in the factory address line in the application form;
  • The factory has all test equipment conforming to relevant Indian standards;
  • Product is certified to meet relevant Indian standards (tested in own laboratory or other independent laboratory according to India standards and submitted with test report).
