IEC 60598, an internationally recognized standard maintained by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), is a cornerstone for the lighting industry, specifically addressing the safety, performance, and reliability of luminaires. This comprehensive standard encompasses a wide array of lighting products, from fixed and portable to suspended types, and extends its applicability to both indoor and outdoor settings. By establishing stringent safety requirements, performance criteria, and detailed testing protocols, IEC 60598 ensures that luminaires are not only safe for end-users but also meet the functional demands of their intended applications.

Objectives

The objectives of IEC 60598 are primarily to ensure the safety and performance of luminaires. Here are the key objectives:

  1. Safety: To establish safety requirements that minimize the risk of electrical shock, fire, and other hazards associated with the use of luminaires. This includes considerations for both the manufacturing process and the end-user experience.
  2. Performance: To define performance criteria that ensure luminaires operate effectively and efficiently. This includes aspects such as light output, energy consumption, and durability.
  3. Standardization: To create a standardized framework that allows for consistent manufacturing and testing practices across different regions and manufacturers. This helps in ensuring that luminaires meet a certain quality threshold regardless of where they are produced.
  4. Harmonization: To facilitate international trade by harmonizing the requirements for luminaires, making it easier for manufacturers to sell their products globally without needing to adapt to different standards in each market.
  5. Innovation: To provide a flexible yet robust framework that can accommodate new technologies and innovations in lighting without compromising on safety and performance.

By adhering to IEC 60598, manufacturers can ensure that their luminaires are safe, reliable, and meet international standards, thereby enhancing consumer confidence and promoting global trade.

范围

The IEC 60598 standard covers a wide range of luminaires, including but not limited to:

  • General luminaires: these provide protection for energized parts but are not specifically designed to prevent the ingress of solid foreign objects or water.
  • Universal luminaires: these are not designed for specific purposes. Examples include suspended luminaires, some spotlight luminaires, and certain surface-mounted or recessed fixed luminaires.
  • Adjustable luminaires: these luminaires allow the main components to rotate or move via hinges, lifting devices, etc., and can be either portable or fixed.
  • Combination luminaires: composed of a basic luminaire and replaceable parts, users can replace these parts either by hand or with tools.

The following are examples of common luminaire categories, including but not limited to:

  • Indoor lighting: this includes lighting needs for homes, offices, shops, restaurants, schools, etc. These luminaires may be chandeliers, wall lights, table lamps, ceiling lights, etc.
  • Outdoor lighting: this includes lighting needs for public roads, city streets, landscape gardens, building exteriors, etc. These luminaires may be street lights, floodlights, landscape lights, etc.
  • Industrial and commercial lighting: this includes lighting needs for factories, warehouses, workshops, supermarkets, exhibition halls, etc. These luminaires may be explosion-proof lights, industrial suspended lights, etc.
  • Special scene lighting: this includes lighting needs for laboratories, theaters, cinemas, etc. These luminaires may be stage lights, cinema lights, etc.
  • Outdoor landscape lighting: this includes lighting needs for parks, squares, playgrounds, building facades, etc. These luminaires may be landscape lights, underwater lights, lawn lights, etc.

Exclusions

While IEC 60598 covers a broad range of luminaires, there are certain exclusions within its scope:

  1. 灯具: the standard does not cover the lamps themselves (e.g., bulbs, tubes), which are addressed by other IEC standards.
  2. Lighting control systems: advanced lighting control systems, such as those involving smart technology or networked controls, may be covered by other standards.
  3. Temporary luminaires: temporary lighting installations, such as those used for events or construction, may have different requirements.

IEC 60598 test items

To verify whether luminaires complies with the IEC 60598 standard, a series of rigorous tests are required, including but not limited to:

Label durability test, lamp holder position test, screw torque test, lamp holder torque test, impact test, suspension and adjustment mechanism test, luminaires suspended by flexible cables, ground resistance test, power cord tension test, capacitor discharge test, durability test, normal temperature rise test, abnormal test, dust and water protection test, insulation resistance test, withstand voltage test, creepage distance test, electrical clearance test, ball pressure test, glow wire test, needle flame test, etc.

In addition to specifying the above test items, the IEC 60598 standard also includes the following important content:

  • Safety levels: different safety levels are defined based on the usage environment and conditions of the luminaires, with clear safety requirements for each level;
  • Test methods: detailed methods for electrical, mechanical, and protection level tests are specified to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test results;
  • Markings and instructions: the mandatory content that must be marked on the luminaires, such as safety level, protection level, applicable power voltage, bulb type, etc., to provide clear guidance for consumersselection and use.
