With the continuous development of science and technology, electronic products have become an important part of our lives. It have brought great convenience to our lives, however, while enjoying these conveniences, we also face a serious problem: the quality and safety of electronic products. Therefore, in order to ensure the quality of products and protect the safety of users, it is necessary to carry out a series of safety performance tests on products before they are putting on the market.

What is safety testing

Safety testing simulates the possible usage methods of customers and conducts a series of tests to assess the possible electric shock, fire, mechanical damage, thermal damage, chemical damage, radiation damage, etc. of electronic products under normal or abnormal use to ensure product safety for users and the environment.

Why is safety testing necessary?

In modern industry, safety testing has become a necessary and important process to effectively evaluate the quality and safety of products. Specifically:

  1. Protecting user safety: safety testing is diagnostic; its direct purpose is to eliminate serious problems with the product to ensure that there is no threat to the user’s safety when the product is in normal use. It can detect and eliminate potential safety hazards in a time, reduce the risk of electric shock, fire and other accidents. It also provides consumers with a reliable reference basis.
  2. Compliance with laws and regulations: safety testing is a necessary condition for products to comply with national and international safety standards. Only through the safety test and comply with the relevant standards, the product can be put on the market and sold.
  3. Enhance product quality: safety testing can provide important feedback and improvement opinions for product design and production. By continuously improving and optimizing the features of the products, the quality and reliability of the products can be improved, thereby attracting more customers.
  4. Enhance brand image: by complying with safety standards and passing safety tests, you can gain trust and recognition for your brand. This helps to increase the market competitiveness and sales of the product.

To summarize, a product that has not been performed safety testing may expose consumers to a variety of risks and hazards, such as electrical malfunctions, electric shock accidents, and so on. This will not only bring losses and injuries to users, but may also affect the reputation and market competitiveness of the enterprise. Therefore, enterprises must pay great attention to the quality and safety of their products and conduct relevant tests and evaluations from time to time.

CE marking and the european market

To sell your product in the European market, it must be marked with CE marking. The CE mark shows that a product meets all the safety, health, and environmental requirements set by the European Union. It is mandatory for electronic products sold in Europe and means that a product can legally be sold anywhere within the EU and the European Economic Area. Products that do not have the CE Marking may not be imported or sold in the EU.

CE marking applies only to electrical and electronic products that fall within its scope—which includes most AC-powered devices such as small appliances and medical equipment, but not larger systems like factories or large power plants. Higher risk devices like pressure equipment or medical devices will require Certification under different CE marking requirements.

Safety requirements in North America

The United States also has many product safety requirements for electrical and electronic goods; for example, the FCC mark is a mandatory label that needs to be applied to all radio frequency emitting devices (intended or unintended). EMC certification is a mandatory requirement in most markets.

In addition, some states have their own laws that apply specifically to their jurisdiction. These can be challenging because they may differ from federal ones depending on your type of product. For example, the California Energy Commission (CEC) Title 20 and Title 24 are specific regulations concerning the energy efficiency of products.

Common safety test items

  1. Insulation resistance test: to detect whether the product has sufficient insulation performance to prevent leakage and other safety hazards.
  2. Ground bond test: to ensure that the ground resistance of the product meets the requirements to reduce the risk of electric shock to people.
  3. Electrical strength test: to test whether the products can work normally under the rated voltage without fire and other dangers.
  4. Mechanical strength test: evaluates whether the structure of the product can withstand the forces and impacts of normal use.
  5. Flame propagation test: tests the combustion performance of a product to prevent the occurrence and spread of fire.

The process of safety testing

  1. Understanding standards and requirements: first of all, testers need to understand domestic and international safety standards and requirements, such as IEC 60950 (safety standard for IT equipment), IEC 60601 (basic safety standard for medical and electrical equipment) and so on.
  2. Design modification and optimization:  modified and optimized the product design according to the relevant standards and requirements to ensure that it meets the corresponding safety standards. This may involve improvements in product structural design, material selection, and circuit layout.
  3. Raw material testing: before production, the raw materials need to be tested to ensure their safety. This includes sampling test of electronic components, plastic materials, wires and cables.
  4. Electrical safety testing: this is the main part of safety testing. It includes testing the insulation resistance, grounding resistance, current leakage, etc. of the product to ensure that the product meets the standard requirements in terms of electrical safety.
  5. Mechanical safety test: in this test, the structure and appearance of the product need to be evaluated to confirm whether there are any potential mechanical hazards, such as sharp edges, parts that can easily cause accidental injuries, etc.
  6. Temperature and electromagnetic compatibility tests: the operating temperature range and electromagnetic compatibility of the product are also key points to be tested. These tests can ensure the reliability and stability of the product in various environments.
  7. Safety marking and documentation preparation: finally, the product needs to be marked with safety markings, such as CE marking, to prove that it meets the corresponding safety standards. At the same time, test reports, technical documents and all others necessary materials need to be prepared for auditing and filing.

What to look for in a product testing company?

  • Accreditation: If you’re looking for a product testing company, make sure that they are accredited. Accreditation is a sign that your product testing company has been approved by an independent third party and has met the industry’s standards for safety and quality assurance. In the US, look for an accredited NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory) provider. In Canada look for a Canadian Certification Body (CB) certified by SCC (Standards Council of Canada).
  • Experience: Find a company that specializes in your industry — this will allow them to provide more accurate results and recommendations based on their knowledge of your products and understanding of the regulatory landscape.
  • Flexibility: Find an organization that can work according to your schedule. You may want to consider a provider that has multiple testing laboratories and well-trained specialist to better serve you.

Where can I get safety testing done?

You can conduct safety testing in professional laboratories or testing institutions, these institutions usually provide different testing services according to your needs and product types, the following are some of the more authoritative testing institutions in China that conduct safety testing for your reference:
