The full name of NVLAP is the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (that is, the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program), which is managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

NVLAP provides accreditation services through various Laboratory Accreditation Programs (LAPs), which are established based on requirements and demonstrated needs. Each LAP includes specific testing or calibration standards and associated methods and protocols to meet the unique accreditation needs of the testing or calibration field.
NVLAP accredits public and private laboratories to perform specific calibrations or tests based on an assessment of their technical qualifications and competence. Accreditation requirements are determined in accordance with the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR, Title 15, Part 285), the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program, and include the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025.

NVLAP provides unbiased third-party assessment and performance identification, and NVLAP accreditation indicates that a laboratory has demonstrated compliance with NVLAP management and technical requirements related to quality systems. However NVLAP accreditation does not imply any assurance (accreditation) of laboratory performance or test/calibration data, it is entirely a discovery of laboratory competence. Laboratories may cite their accreditation status and use the term NVLAP and symbols in reports, stationery, and business and trade publications, provided that this use does not imply product certification.
